WOMEN,
THE VICTIMS OF GUJARAT:
A Talk by SHABNAM HASHMI
"I have never known a riot
which has used the sexual subjugation of women so widely
as an instrument of violence as in the recent mass barbarity
in Gujarat. There are reports everywhere of gang-rape,
of young girls and women, often in the presence of members
of their families, followed by their murder by burning
alive, or by bludgeoning with a hammer and in one case
with a screw driver." [HARSH MANDER in Human Rights
Watch report. Harsh Mander was Country Director of Action
Aid India and an officer in the Indian Civil Services
who resigned after witnessing state complicity in the
Gujarat carnage]
SHABNAM HASHMI runs
the Safdar Hashmi Memorial Trust (SAHMAT), a humanitarian
organization in Delhi, named after her brother, Safdar
Hashmi, who was murdered during a street theatre performance
some years back.
Shabnam Hashmi has
led extensive fact finding missions on the gross human
rights violations that occured in Gujarat, has co-authored
several reports on the ethnic cleansing of Muslims in
Gujarat including the SAHMAT report on Women and the
ground-breaking documentary: 'Hey Ram, Genocide in the
Land of Gandhi'. She has also published an exhibition
under the banner "Artists Against Communalism" that
has been shown internationally.
